Recent years have seen a worrying rise in autocratization, marked by the weakening of
democratic institutions and the rise of authoritarian leaders. This trend is particularly
concerning in developing countries, where nascent democracies struggle to strengthen
democratic norms while facing autocratic pressures. This shift endangers political
stability, socio-economic development, and human rights.
Autocratization includes the gradual dismantling of democratic mechanisms, such as
curtailing political freedoms, suppressing dissent, and manipulating elections. In
developing countries, these issues are often exacerbated by weak institutions, economic
instability, and social divisions. Authoritarian regimes that consolidate power threaten
democracy's foundations, creating a hazardous environment for civil liberties, political
pluralism, and social equity.
This open panel call for papers aims to address the issue of resisting autocratization and
preserving democratic values, focusing on the challenges faced by developing countries.
