Description

Irregular migration continues to attract global attention. This is a result of the movement of undocumented migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers from economically unstable and conflict zones in the Global South into the Global North. Such movements involves men, women and children who risk their lives through dangerous terrain to access a “safe haven” in countries of the Global North. An important example is the African youths who explore this route through the Sahara and Mediterranean into Europe.
The European Union (EU), which serves as a destination space for migrants, has also instituted measures to curb this situation. The EU’s policy responses in this regard were included in the 2015 European Agenda on Migration and followed by the 2020 New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
This panel aims to bring together scholars from both the Global South and Global North who have been keeping track issues of irregular migration. We welcome proposals that speak to the various efforts of concerned parties and stakeholders in addressing the phenomenon of irregular migration. Specifically, this panel prioritizes abstracts in the following areas.
1. Contextualisation of irregular migration and measures introduced to address it both in the Global South and Global North.
2. Mapping the various actors involved and dimensions of harmonisation processes and explication of strategies/ measures introduced.
3. The role of state and non-state actors vis-à-vis the perils that confront migrants on their journeys.
4. Acceptance, non-acceptance and integration processes for undocumented migrants in destination countries e.g. Europe.
