Globally, Indigenous peoples and states are grappling with issues around Indigenous governance, self-governance, and self-determination. This panel invites research from any context that studies Indigenous self-determination in relation to states; state recognition of Indigenous self-determination; as well as conceptualizations of Indigenous sovereignty, nationhood, and governance, which are not based on state power and institutional hierarchy. Scholars of Indigenous politics have studied Indigenous governance and the colonial state. While facilitating these types of studies, the panel will also include scholarship that critically engages with the evolution of the colonial state and Indigenous governance. Likewise, the panel invites scholarship on Indigenous self-determination to reflect on political alternatives, which seek to revalue, reconstruct, and redeploy Indigenous cultural practices based on self-determination. In summary, this panel will cover topics relating to governance and self-determination in any Indigenous context or across contexts.
