Papers on this panel discuss a wide range of developments in legislative-executive relations in industrialized democracies. Many countries experienced a rapid power shift from a legislature to a more powerful and frequently populist executive. Some, however, had a more predictable dynamics. Papers present country case studies and discuss some of the main factors associated with the observed developments. Some point to a crisis, such as a pandemic that led to executives claiming more power and retaining it after the crisis. Some discuss institutional changes, such as changes in election laws and constitutional reforms, that governments introduced in recent years. Some others point to economic factors that influenced legislative-executive relations. The panel is designed to offer the opportunity to present and discuss factors that can be associated with the dynamics of legislative-executive relations in industrialized democracies.
