Political Economy of decarbonization in the Global South

Against the backdrop of the ongoing climate crisis and the prevalent geopolitical challenges, many countries in the Global South have embarked on degrees of green transitions and begun to craft green industrial policies, while also becoming hubs of new extractivism. Some of these countries have made important commitments regarding decarbonization, indicated by their pledges before the international bodies. How can we understand the diverging levels of climate commitments? How are climate policies designed at the national level? How do domestic businesses respond to changing signals and regulations in the global and regional markets? How do governments with varying ideological positions interact with international and national climate communities? What is the role of ‘green branding’ across different regions of the Global South? How are the flows of climate financing filtered by economic and geopolitical dynamics at the regional and national levels? Focusing on the political economy of climate action and green transitions, this panel invites submissions/ papers that explore distinct dimensions of climate policies in developing countries.
