Patriarchal parties, party politics and gender

Political parties are pivotal to the functioning of most democracies. How democratic are political parties? One measure of this might be their gender sensitivity and their willingness not just to appoint women to leadership posts and nominate them for election but also support their election campaigns. Set in contexts across Asia and Africa, the papers on this panel examine barriers internal to political parties that serve as impediments to women's political rise.
