Local governance and the climate crisis

Cities are a key contributor to climate change, as urban activities are major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Estimates suggest that urban areas are responsible for 70 percent of global CO2 emissions, with transport and buildings being among the largest contributors (IPCC, 2022). This panel explore the role of cities and local level governance in the context of the climate crisis with a focus on both climate adaptation and mitigation. Case studies from the across the World will provide examples of good practices and highlight key challenges faced by cities in developing their adaptation strategies and reducing emissions by empowering communities in the process.
