Human Rights in Critical Times addresses a vision of the scope of human rights in different countries and contexts, such as the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, as well as the various nuances that influence these, including religion, politics, and culture. Additionally, it touches on more controversial topics, such as the death penalty and its application in different countries as a solution to crimes, as seen in the Middle East. It also discusses issues like prison populations and the maximum level of pressure that can be exerted without violating basic rights, as in the case of El Salvador, or the extreme repression of protests, as seen in Peru or Venezuela. Furthermore, it examines the social and other effects of the death penalty in countries where it is still in use.
