Description

This panel addresses the complex and evolving relationship between the Global South and the United States, particularly in light of systemic shifts in global power structures. As the international order becomes increasingly multipolar, the Global South’s perspectives on U.S. influence—whether in economic, political, or cultural realms—highlight both challenges and opportunities for these nations to redefine their roles on the world stage.
Through collective insights from professors representing regions across Latin America, Africa, and South Asia, this panel will examine how nations in the Global South perceive the United States' role amid growing alternatives to traditional Western hegemony. We will discuss the ways in which these countries are re-evaluating their ties with the U.S. and their strategies for adapting to a rapidly changing international landscape. Topics include how systemic changes impact issues of sovereignty, development, and multilateral cooperation and how the Global South is increasingly asserting its agency in global governance forums.
In addition, this panel will explore the implications of emerging narratives that question U.S. leadership in areas such as trade, security, and diplomacy. For many Global South nations, the recent shifts away from unipolarity are creating opportunities to diversify partnerships and pursue regional and South-South collaborations, reshaping traditional alliances and power dynamics.

By examining how systemic change is interpreted through a Global South lens, this panel will provide a holistic view of how these nations respond collectively to U.S. actions while pursuing new forms of resilience and autonomy. Our discussion aims to enrich international relations scholarship by shedding light on how these countries adapt to and influence global changes, emphasizing their role not as passive recipients but as active participants in shaping the future global order. This panel seeks to engage the audience in a dialogue about the repositioning of Global South nations in an era of global systemic transformation, underscoring their perspectives, resilience, and contributions to the evolving world order.
