Federalism and Conflict Resolution

In a world of inter- and intra-state conflicts, federalism remains a powerful tool of conflict resolution. However, cases such as Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Nepal highlight the challenges in implementing federal structures in post-conflict settings. Likewise, failed federal reforms in Myanmar, Libya and Syria have all demonstrated, that agreement on a transition to federal democracy is never certain, linear or easy.
The panel invites papers looking theoretically at the relationship of federalism and conflict resolution, studies case studies individually or comparatively and provides new conceptual and empirical insights. We particularly welcome papers studying lesser known cases from the Global South.
