Description

ntroduction
Recent years have seen a worrying rise in autocratization, marked by the weakening of
democratic institutions and the rise of authoritarian leaders. This trend is particularly
concerning in developing countries, where nascent democracies struggle to strengthen
democratic norms while facing autocratic pressures. This shift endangers political
stability, socio-economic development, and human rights.
Autocratization includes the gradual dismantling of democratic mechanisms, such as
curtailing political freedoms, suppressing dissent, and manipulating elections. In
developing countries, these issues are often exacerbated by weak institutions, economic
instability, and social divisions. Authoritarian regimes that consolidate power threaten
democracy's foundations, creating a hazardous environment for civil liberties, political
pluralism, and social equity.
This open panel call for papers aims to address the issue of resisting autocratization and
preserving democratic values, focusing on the challenges faced by developing countries.
The panel will explore strategies and frameworks to counteract the erosion of democratic
practices and support the resilience of democratic institutions. By examining historical
and contemporary cases, the panel will analyze the dynamics driving autocratization and
efforts to combat it.
We seek contributions on various aspects, including civil society's role, international
support, digital tools, and legal measures. Papers exploring successful resistance
strategies, analyzing different actors' roles in defending democracy, and proposing
innovative solutions are particularly valued. The goal is to enhance understanding and
develop actionable insights for strengthening democratic resilience against growing
autocratic threats.
