The Geoeconomics of the Indo-Pacific

How do established and rising powers compete for political-economic influence in a specific geographical space? The Indo-Pacific in the 21st Century offers a critical context for answering such a question insofar as China, India, and Japan, along with other states, have been deploying economic statecraft tools for building political connections. While those powers do not necessarily require exclusivity from their political-economic partners, they clearly aim at increasing their status at both regional and global levels and mitigating vulnerabilities that arise from rising degrees of geopolitical risk. In discussing topics as diverse as technology and development finance, the papers in panel provide an overview of the state-of-art of power disputes in the Indo-Pacific, with potential application of the findings to other regional contexts that are also crucial for understanding the fate of globalization.
