Maritime Politics and Global Markets

Type

Description

Freedom of seas has been essential for the existence of an open economic environment at the global level. Military competition among great powers, however, tend to threaten such an environment. Yet, the literature that connects developments in International Political Economy (IPE) with security issues has meaningful gaps in explaining the impact of maritime politics in the world trade and, hence, investments related to offshoring and the establishment of global value chains. The papers in this panel aim to contribute to understanding the dynamics of maritime politics, including attempts to regulate the use of force and natural resources, as the contestation of economic globalization reaches unprecedent levels.
